SPEAKER

Liangfei Qiu is the PricewaterhouseCoopers Associate Professor in the Department of Information Systems and Operations Management, Warrington College of Business, University of Florida. He received his Ph.D. in 2014 from the University of Texas at Austin. His current research focuses on social networks and social media platforms, economics of information systems, healthcare analytics, sharing/gig economy, and human-artificial intelligence (AI) interaction. His research has appeared in premier academic journals, such as Information Systems Research, MIS Quarterly, Production and Operations Management, Journal of Management Information Systems, and Decision Support Systems. He received the INFORMS Information Systems Society Sandy Slaughter Early Career Award and Association for Information Systems (AIS) Early Career Award in 2019.He is currently an Associate Editor for MIS Quarterly, a Senior Editor for Production and Operations Management, and an Associate Editor for Decision Support Systems.

How Uber Shaping Public Transit System: A Counterfactual Estimator Approach

ABSTRACT

The sharing economy reshapes the distribution of unused or underutilized assets through digital platforms to individuals who are willing to pay for the services. The new gig economy model has introduced a dramatic impact on the traditional industries by matching the demand and supply in real-time. In this paper, we examine how the entry of Uber, a ride-sharing services digital platform, influences the demand for public transportation. Significant debate has surrounded whether the new ride-sharing model siphoned riders from public transit or made transit feasible for more riders, but no consensus has been concluded yet. One reason could be that the commonly used difference-in-differences empirical strategy fails to account for time-varying unobserved confounders. To address this issue, we introduce a class of counterfactual estimators (CEs), which relax the assumption of absence of time-varying confounders, to strengthen our causal identification and perform diagnostic tests to validate model assumptions for each CE. A significant drop in the number of passenger trips with buses is found after Uber entry from both the conventional two-way fixed effects model and the counterfactual estimators. Moreover, we provide empirical evidence that the entry of Uber has not significantly affected public demand response transportation, which indicates that Uber is not directly competing with other transportation services that aim to solve the “l(fā)ast mile problem.” Last, our additional analyses suggest that the effect of Uber entry is not uniform – the reduction in bus passenger trips is mitigated when people are stick to bus trip as their routine commute mode to work, but not for carpool or drive alone; the decrease is amplified when the populations of under property, disabled people, including with language difficulty, and self-employed people are large. All these empirical findings can be coherently explained in our framework of the substitution effect of Uber.

Ming Fan is an Associate Professor（Tenured Professor） of the Department of Information Systems and Operations Management, Foster School of Business, University of Washington, and a researcher of the Center for Research in Electronic Commerce, University of Texas. He also serves as the faculty director of the MSIS Program at Foster School of Business, University of Washington. He is currently a senior editor of Information Systems and e-Business Management, being one of the first scholars to conduct research on Internet finance at home and abroad.
