Tsinghua Global MBA Class of 2021
Many years of actuarial experience in the insurance industry. Worked at Global 100 company, Generali, and Fortune 500 company, Voya Financial
Three years ago, I was just like you that I had decided to pursue an MBA degree but was unsure of which school to apply to. You may be curious, of all the schools out there, why did I finally choose Tsinghua? After reading this article, you will understand why and will hopefully even come to the same conclusion that Tsinghua is the best option for you too.
The Tsinghua global MBA program offers a wide range of curriculum that cultivates future leaders with general management capabilities. For example, the managerial economics, DMD, and accounting classes build solid analysis foundations, and modules on corporate finance, marketing, and operations introduce management fundamentals. While providing this essential knowledge of business, the program does not neglect the importance of practical soft skills. The managerial thinking, organizational behavior, and ethics class significantly improve students’ soft skills. As a global MBA program, the curriculum strongly emphasizes global perspectives and China’s roots. For instance, the Sloan Module, Chinese economy in the world, global technology strategy classes equipped Chinese students with global vision and enable international students to form a deeper understanding of China and its business environment.

Some people say. MBA students sit in an ivory tower and talk about outdated textbook cases all day but know nothing about the real world. This assumption is completely inaccurate at Tsinghua. Practical application of learning is highly promoted in Tsinghua. I remember studying a course called "Management Simulation". We were divided into several groups competing in the same dynamic market and elected our own CEO, CFO, CTO, COO, CMO, and other department managers to make decisions on pricing, R&D, production, marketing, HR, etc. After each round, each group was updated on market performance and stock prices. And at the end of the entire competition, we were ranked based on the stock price. It was an intensive 2-day experience. But we all learned and gained so much from the class, including business creation, financial analysis, teamwork, and strategic decision-making. The class enabled us to apply theoretical knowledge through real-world practice, and learn to make effective decisions from a holistic and strategic perspective.

In the second semester, you will have an opportunity to apply for a dual degree. The dual degree programs help students to supplement the education received at Tsinghua with additional management knowledge that can be obtained at partner schools. There are many options for you. For example, the MIT MSMS program, the HEC Paris MBA program, the Columbia master of science program in business analytics, and other dual degree programs.
I was admitted to the MIT MSMS program last year, and have graduated this June. During the past year, I have gained hands-on opportunities to learn in a global environment and have worked with brilliant minds to discuss, tackle and develop solutions to complex problems. At MIT Sloan, hands-on learning opportunities are integrated throughout the curriculum, and students are frequently encouraged to apply knowledge and skills in a way that improves today, advances tomorrow, and benefits the world. In my economics class, we discussed how artificial intelligence will affect the job market and global economy, and how current education systems should reform to respond to the evolving economic conditions. In my pricing class, we sat down with real companies to listen to their predicament, and work out the most feasible plan for them. In addition to MIT classes, students are encouraged to take classes from Harvard. There you could meet more like-minded innovators to advance your career and turn your vision into reality.

MIT is not only a fountain of ideas and talents, but more importantly a respectful and supportive community. At school, if you have questions, the professors are always willing to help you find the answers, or lead you to someone who can. When you graduate, you will join an exceptional network of more than 136,000 MIT alumni, representing 90 countries around the world. Alumni are always willing to help when you have a problem. I remember the professor from my entrepreneurship law class once said, when you get to a stage that you are serious about establishing a company, the first thing you would want to do is to consult an attorney. And guess who you can turn to? The alumni. MIT alumni are willing to take the time to advise you, even though they are leading lawyers. Another story is from a friend of mine who graduated from the MSMS program. Last year, he got a job interview and happened to discover that an MIT MBA graduate was working at the company. He contacted her for some advice about the job interview. My friend thought it would be a short few-minute chat, but the alumna talked with him for two hours. Even though she did not know him, nor was from the same program, she did so just because they were all MIT students. I was amazed by how supportive the alumni community is.
In fact, the support starts even before you enter MIT. Each year, before school starts, the MIT club in Beijing organizes a new student send-off event to welcome new students and offer useful advice. In addition, the club regularly hosts various events, including business forums, talks, parties, and other interesting events.

The same applies to the Tsinghua alumni community. When I was looking for a job, I was exhausted and asked many alumni for advice. They were all willing to take the time to offer me advice no matter how busy they were.
Tsinghua and MIT are well recognized around the world. A degree from here says that you are exceptional, and will open doors of unimaginable opportunities. So do not hesitate to apply. I am looking forward to meeting you on campus in 2022!
