After showing that the suitability index of TseTse fly helps account for overall financial development, household access to credit, and firm access to finance, we evaluate three potential mechanisms linking the TseTse fly to modernfinance—ethnic fragmentation, precolonial centralization, and trade. We discover that the TseTse fly is strongly, positively related to ethnic fragmentation and negatively related to precolonial centralization.
