Join us on December 17, 2024, at 18:30, as Mr. Kaushik Basu, Professor of International Studies at Cornell University, former Senior Vice President and Chief Economist of the World Bank, and former Chief Economic Adviser to the Indian Government, shares his profound insights gained from two very different worlds: economic research and policy-making at the Guanghua School of Management, Peking University.

Professor Kaushik Basu quoted John Maynard Keynes' famous saying："The ideas of economists and political philosophers, both when they are right and when they are wrong, are more powerful than is commonly understood. Indeed, the world is ruled by little else." Drawing on his cross-boundary experiences, ProfessorKaushik Basu will delve into how academic ideas influence the real world and how real-world experiences can guide theoretical research in more interesting and challenging directions.

考?？恕ぐ吞K，印度籍經(jīng)濟學家，康奈爾大學經(jīng)濟學教授和卡爾·馬克斯國際研究講席教授。2017—2020年擔任國際經(jīng)濟學會主席，2012—2016年擔任世界銀行高級副行長兼首席經(jīng)濟學家，2009—2012年任印度政府首席經(jīng)濟顧問。

Kaushik Basu, Indian economist, is Professor of Economics and the Carl Marks Professor of International Studies at Cornell University. He is currently President of the International Economic Association, serving a term 2017-2020. He was formerly Senior Vice President and Chief Economist of the World Bank, 2012-2016, and, prior to that, Chief Economic Adviser to the Indian Government, 2009-2012.

Basu received his PhD and M.Sc (Econ) from the London School of Economics and BA (Hons) from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. He has received honorary doctorates from several institutes and universities, including IIT Bombay, Fordham University New York, and the University of Bath U.K.

Kaushik Basu has published widely in the areas of Development Economics, Industrial Organization, Game Theory and Welfare Economics. Professor Basu has contributed popular articles to magazines and newspapers, such as The New York Times, Scientific American, India Today, Business Standard and BBC News Online.

In May 2008 he was awarded one of India’s highest civilian awards, the Padma Bhushan, by the President of India. Kaushik Basu has held visiting positions at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, and the London School of Economics, Harvard University, Princeton University and M.I.T. He was Professor of Economics at the Delhi School of Economics, where in 1992 he founded the Centre for Development Economics and was its first Executive Director. He is also a founding member of the Madras School of Economics.

Xiaobo Zhang’s main research areas focus on agricultural economics, development economics, and the Chinese economy. He has published over 90 articles in peer-reviewed English journals, including Journal of Political Economy, American Journal of Agricultural Economics, European Economic Review, Journal of Development Economics, Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, Journal of Economic Perspective, Journal of International Economics, Journal of Public Economics, and Proceedings of National Academy of Science. His publications are widely cited. As of October 2022, Google Scholar lists more than 18,200 citations of publications authored or co-authored by him. The h-index and i10-index for Xiaobo compiled by Google Scholar is 59 and 161 respectively. He received the Sun Yefang Prize for Economics Research in China (the most prestigious award in the field of economics in China), the Zhang Peigang Development Economics Outstanding Achievement Award (the highest award in the field of development economics), and Pushan Award on Outstanding Articles in International Economics. He has rich field experience in developing countries, such as leading the Guizhou Household Panel Survey (four waves on more than 800 households), China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) survey (co-PI), Enterprise Survey for Innovation and Entrepreneurship in China (ESIEC), Quarterly Online Survey on Micro-and-small Enterprises (OSOME) in China, cluster surveys in Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Myanmar, and Tunisia as well as village surveys in China and India.
